Shocking footage from a pro-Palestine rally in downtown Montreal has sparked widespread outrage after protesters displayed and paraded effigies hanging from nooses, including figures representing Israeli leaders, U.S. President Donald Trump, and what appeared to be a Jewish man wearing a kippah.

The event, organized by the activist group Montreal4Palestine (Mtl4Pal) on May 24-25 in Phillips Square and surrounding streets, featured multiple effigies with ropes around their necks. Video shows:

  • Effigies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
  • National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir (depicted with a large white kippah)
  • U.S. President Donald Trump
  • A separate figure clearly dressed as a Jew wearing a kippah, paraded alongside a Montreal Canadiens hockey flag.

The imagery has drawn fierce criticism from Jewish organizations and Canadian officials, who described it as evoking “some of the darkest antisemitic imagery in history.”

  • Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and other groups condemned the display.
  • Israeli Foreign Minister contacted his Canadian counterpart regarding the surge in antisemitism.
  • Canadian MP Anthony Housefather and others called the scenes “disgusting.”

Canada recorded a record 6,800 antisemitic incidents in 2025, averaging nearly 19 per day.

No arrests have been reported so far. The incident comes amid ongoing tensions in Montreal, where Mtl4Pal has organized frequent demonstrations since October 2023.
