In a disturbing act of vandalism, unknown individuals poured oil along the outer walls and front steps of the Muizenberg Shul early today (Wednesday, December 24, 2025. The incident, which occurred during a peak period for the synagogue amid holiday gatherings, has prompted a community call for assistance in cleanup efforts.

According to a notice issued by the Muizenberg Shul Committee, congregants and visitors arriving for morning prayers were met with the unsettling scene. The shul, a key gathering place for the local Jewish community, was hosting both regular members and national visitors at the time, heightening concerns during what is typically a busy and festive season.

"It is unclear whether the intention was to cause further damage or to intimidate and send a message to the Cape Town Jewish community," the committee stated in their notice. "The matter is being treated seriously."

Barry Katz, chairman of the shul, appealed to the community via a WhatsApp group earlier that day, requesting urgent help to remove the oil and restore the affected areas. With professional cleaning services limited due to the holiday eve, the committee emphasized the need for volunteer support. "We thank those who have already stepped forward to assist and remain grateful for the unity, care, and resilience shown by our community in response to this act," the notice added.

The Muizenberg Shul, located in the coastal suburb of Muizenberg, serves as a vital hub for Jewish life in Cape Town. Community leaders have historically highlighted the importance of vigilance against hate-motivated incidents, especially during high-visibility periods like the holidays.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact local authorities or the shul committee.
