Dave Matthews, frontman of the Dave Matthews Band, has intensified his support for Palestinians in 2025, speaking out during concerts amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
In May 2025, Matthews paused a concert to describe the situation in Gaza as “one of the most monstrous things I’ve ever seen,” focusing on Palestinian suffering without mentioning the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.
And, as if that wasn't bad enough, last week (July 15, 2025) at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Michigan, he expressed “deep solidarity with the Palestinian people,” calling their plight a “famine amid the ongoing Israeli genocide.”
Matthews’ comments follow his 2024 protest in Washington, D.C., where he joined thousands opposing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s congressional speech. He told Al Jazeera he was “disgusted” that his “tax dollars are going to the brutalizing of an entire people.”
But many Jewish and pro-Israel fans are outraged. On July 21, 2025, X users like @Betar_USA and @TzofehHaAlmoni criticized Matthews for ignoring Israeli children killed by Hamas and the 101 hostages still held in Gaza, accusing him of pushing “genocidal propaganda.” Radio host Jason Rantz called his remarks antisemitic, arguing he sidesteps Hamas’s attacks and its misuse of aid for weapons. A Reddit post by u/ThatsAmores, a fan who attended 70 shows, announced a boycott after Matthews’ 2023 comments calling Gaza “sweet Gaza” and accusing Israel of genocide, a sentiment carrying into 2025.
