Three Dead After Egypt Highway Robbery Raid

Thieves filmed opening moving truck's doors to steal frozen poultry; shootout follows police operation in Cairo area

Movie-style heist

A brazen highway robbery captured on camera in Egypt ended in a deadly police operation: three members of a theft ring were killed in a shootout with security forces, while three additional suspects were arrested.

The incident occurred on the Cairo-Ismailia highway in the Shorouk area of Cairo. According to investigators, a refrigerated truck transporting frozen poultry to the 10th of Ramadan industrial zone became the target of thieves traveling in a van behind it.

Video footage circulated online shows the suspects pulling alongside the moving truck, opening its rear door while both vehicles were in motion, and removing merchandise without the truck driver noticing. The audacious method led Egyptian social media users to dub it the "Hollywood heist" as a result of its resemblance to action movie scenes.

Investigation findings revealed that the stolen goods included seven crates containing approximately 140 kilograms of frozen products. Police determined this was not an isolated incident but rather the work of an organized gang specializing in stealing from vehicles and cargo during transit.

Investigators identified the gang members and located their hideouts in the Cairo and Qalyubia governorates. During a raid on one hideout in the al-Qalj area of Qalyubia, the suspects spotted approaching security forces and opened fire. Officers returned fire, and three suspects were killed in the exchange. Three others were taken into custody.

The operation also yielded weapons including two automatic rifles, a hunting rifle, and another firearm, along with the van allegedly used in the robbery and portions of the stolen merchandise. Authorities said they are examining possible connections between the gang and additional theft cases.

According to Egyptian reports, several gang members had criminal records and were already known to authorities for serious offenses including robbery, attempted murder, drug violations, and illegal weapons possession.
