An Israeli rabbi was detained at Miami International Airport last weekend and held for 24 hours after authorities discovered an outstanding traffic warrant from years past, according to reporting from Kikar HaShabbat. Rabbi David Freehof was released after intervention by Israeli businessmen who helped resolve the bureaucratic hold.
According to Kikar HaShabbat, Freehof had traveled to Miami with family members when he was arrested upon arrival at the airport. The detention stemmed from a traffic warrant that had been issued years earlier. According to sources cited by Kikar, a friend had been responsible for handling the citation but failed to address it, leaving the warrant active in the system.
During his 24-hour detention, Freehof's religious items, his yarmulke and rtzitzis, were removed by authorities, according to Kikar's account.
The situation was resolved after Israeli businessmen Yisrael Gottlieb and Mark Rosenberg intervened and mobilized to address the warrant and facilitate Freehof's release. Following their efforts, Freehof was released and reunited with his family.
The incident highlights the complications that can arise when administrative matters slip through bureaucratic cracks, and the important role that diaspora community networks play in resolving such situations for Israelis traveling or residing abroad.
