Netanyahu backs Deri amid coalition talk

Prime minister issues statement of support for Shas chairman as reports emerge that Gadi Eisenkot is considering offering chareidi parties a place in a government under his leadership

Netanyahu and Deri

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement Monday morning expressing support for Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, against the backdrop of reports that Gadi Eisenkot is weighing an offer to the chareidi parties to join a government under his leadership.

"Aryeh Deri has stood firm for years in the face of the unbridled attacks by the media and the left, who want to crush Shas," Netanyahu said. "Now, in hypocrisy that cries out to heaven, they are prepared to offer the chareidim heaven and earth so that they will join them."

The prime minister added that "Aryeh Deri and Shas are important partners of mine and of the right-wing bloc in leading the state, and Aryeh Deri contributes greatly in the cabinet to Israel's security."
