The Peleg Yerushalmi faction is mobilizing for mass demonstrations across Israel today (Sunday) in response to an intensifying wave of arrests targeting yeshiva students who have refused military induction. The protests, scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM in the Jerusalem and Bnei Brak areas, come on the heels of a dramatic weekend that saw multiple arrests and confrontations between security forces and the Torah community.

HaGaon Rabbi Azriel Auerbach, leader of the Peleg Yerushalmi, issued a forceful directive calling on all members of the faction to participate in the demonstrations. "This is no time for silence," Rabbi Auerbach stated in his proclamation. "There is a double and redoubled obligation upon every ben Torah, wherever he may be, to protest the degradation of Torah and its students, against the criminal arrests and against military authorities and their collaborators from within and without."

Weekend Arrests Spark Outrage

The protests were triggered by a series of arrests that unfolded over the past weekend. On Friday evening, two students from Yeshivat Maalot HaTorah, both aged 21, were detained by traffic police on Route 6. Among those arrested was Michael Petrov, son of the yeshiva's Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yosef Petrov. The students had declined to report to military recruitment offices in accordance with directives from leading Torah authorities.

The situation escalated further after midnight between Saturday and Sunday, when a dramatic confrontation erupted on Route 1 near the Kiryat Yearim interchange. Military Police attempted to arrest another yeshiva student and transfer him to military custody. Within minutes, dozens of protesters converged on the scene, blocking the highway in a tense standoff that lasted several minutes. Ultimately, police forces withdrew and released the student.

Strategic Planning Behind Closed Doors

Sources within the Peleg Yerushalmi revealed that intensive discussions have taken place in recent days regarding the escalating pattern of arrests targeting the Torah world. One proposal under consideration involved sending hundreds of yeshiva students simultaneously to military recruitment offices in an effort to overwhelm the system and force its collapse.

The Committee for Saving the Torah World confirmed that today's demonstrations will commence at 5:00 PM in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak. Specific locations will be announced later in the day, a tactical approach that has become characteristic of Peleg Yerushalmi's protest strategy. By withholding exact locations until the last moment, organizers aim to prevent security forces from preparing countermeasures in advance.

Growing Tensions in the Torah Community

The arrests have created an atmosphere of heightened anxiety within yeshiva circles. Students have reportedly been warned by their institutions to avoid contact with police officers, including those operating in civilian clothing. The fear extends beyond formal recruitment centers, with incidents occurring during routine traffic stops and even at students' homes.

Peleg Yerushalmi officials emphasized that the protests are directed specifically against what they term "criminal arrests" of yeshiva students and the "degradation of Torah and its learners." They stressed that participation in the demonstrations constitutes a religious obligation for every member of the Torah community. The faction's leadership has made clear that they view the current situation as a fundamental assault on Torah study itself, warranting an uncompromising response.

As the 5:00 PM deadline approaches, security forces are bracing for potential disruptions to major traffic arteries. The exact scope and locations of the protests remain uncertain, but the Peleg Yerushalmi's track record suggests significant mobilization across multiple sites simultaneously.
