A Cypriot national who died following a fatal automobile accident donated her heart to a 45 year old Israeli woman who had been waiting nearly two years for a transplant. The complex surgical procedure was successfully completed at the Rabin Medical Centre in Tel Aviv following a 26 hour operation that required extensive coordination between specialized medical teams from Cyprus, Greece, and Israel.

Health authorities in Israel received initial notification on Thursday morning regarding the availability of a suitable donor heart in Cyprus. Medical specialists immediately conducted preliminary evaluations to confirm compatibility before identifying the recipient at the Tel Aviv facility.

The organ retrieval procedure was scheduled in Nicosia at three in the morning on Friday. Four separate medical units worked simultaneously during the intervention, with the Israeli team harvesting the heart while medical personnel from Cyprus and Greece recovered the lungs, liver, and kidneys to benefit other waiting patients.

Following the organ extraction, a dedicated helicopter transported the Israeli medical team directly to Larnaca International Airport. The transport aircraft touched down in Israel at seven forty in the morning, allowing emergency couriers to deliver the donor heart to the hospital operating theatre in under an hour.

Surgical specialists at Rabin Medical Centre completed the transplantation procedure and promptly notified their counterparts in Cyprus that the operation ended successfully. Dr. Tamar Ashkenazi, director of Israel's National Transplant Centre, emphasized that the initiative required seamless logistics across various public entities, stating, "Every hour was critical."

The successful organ transfer reflects ongoing institutional cooperation between Cyprus and Israel regarding organ transplantation initiatives. Representatives from Rabin Medical Centre noted that Cypriot citizens have similarly received life saving organ donations through this bilateral framework over recent years.
