Arab world's biggest army

Egypt's army: huge numbers, huge problems

Cairo fields the Arab world's largest force, with over 1.2 million personnel, thousands of advanced tanks and nearly 1,100 aircraft, but mixed equipment from the US, France and Russia creates maintenance headaches that raise questions about real combat readiness

The Arab world's largest military machine continues to serve as the region's central military pillar. With over 1.2 million personnel in active service and reserves, thousands of advanced Abrams tanks, the only helicopter carriers of their kind in Africa, and an air force numbering nearly 1,100 aircraft, the Egyptian military presents impressive figures that place it 19th globally.

But beneath the striking numbers lie enormous logistical challenges and complex maintenance of mixed equipment from different sources, raising questions about the true operational capability of this force.

According to Global Firepower data for 2026, Egypt ranks 19th worldwide thanks to a combination of massive manpower and unprecedented quantitative strength. The Egyptian military counts approximately 438,500 regular soldiers, alongside some 479,000 reservists and 300,000 internal security personnel, forming a combined force of over 1.2 million.

On the ground, Cairo maintains approximately 3,620 tanks, placing it sixth in the world. The tanks are based partly on local production of M1A1 Abrams tanks, alongside thousands of armored vehicles and more than two thousand artillery pieces. In the navy, two Mistral-class helicopter carriers stand out particularly — a strategic asset unique in Africa and the Middle East that enables extensive landing and force projection capabilities.

The Egyptian air force, numbering approximately 1,088 aircraft, displays a diverse mosaic of American F-16s, French Rafales and Mirages, and Russian aircraft like the MiG-29M. This combination creates operational flexibility but also significant maintenance challenges stemming from the need to service different systems from different sources.

Despite the impressive quantitative strength, the Egyptian military faces significant challenges. Geographic distance and logistical difficulties limit the ability to project force over large distances. For example, in the case of the Nile dam in Ethiopia, despite Egypt's clear military superiority, the enormous distance of between 2,000 and 2,500 kilometers and the logistical difficulties make military action practically impossible.

The Egyptian military also contends with complex maintenance challenges arising from the mixed equipment. The combination of American, French and Russian systems requires a complex and expensive maintenance apparatus, and raises questions about the ability to operate all systems simultaneously in a real wartime scenario.

In recent years Egypt has deepened its military ties with various powers. In 2025 and 2026, "Eagles of Civilization" exercises were held with China, during which particularly advanced Chinese fighter jets landed on Egyptian soil, including the J-10C and additional models like the J-16. The exercises also included an advanced Chinese electronic warfare aircraft, the Y-9LG, which was identified crossing Saudi airspace on its return to China.

The deepening relationship with China raises concern in Israel and the United States. According to reports, the Israeli security establishment is working behind the scenes to convince the White House to approve the sale of advanced F-15 aircraft to Egypt, aiming to prevent a permanent Chinese military presence on Israel's western border.

Beyond China, Egypt conducts joint military exercises with Turkey, despite the diplomatic tensions between them. The exercises included air and ground forces, and indicate both countries' desire to maintain military communication channels despite political disagreements.
