Presidential Aircraft Emergency Slide Deploys at Andrews

An unusual incident occurred Wednesday at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland as President Donald Trump prepared to fly to Dallas. An emergency evacuation slide suddenly inflated on the side of the new presidential aircraft, a Boeing 747 that the United States received from Qatar, briefly delaying the president's departure.

Trump had arrived at the base aboard the presidential helicopter but remained inside while crew members dealt with the slide, which had deployed on the right side of the aircraft. According to the Associated Press, a source briefed on the matter said military personnel accidentally activated the slide. The White House characterized the incident as a test to verify the system was functioning properly.

Emergency Slide Deploys on Trump's New Presidential Aircraft Before Departure

After waiting in the helicopter, Trump emerged and spoke with reporters. "They're checking the slide here, and I think it will take about 15 minutes," he said. When asked whether he was confident the aircraft was safe to fly, he responded: "Yes, I'm sure, otherwise I wouldn't get on it."

During the inspection, the older Air Force One aircraft was also positioned nearby, adding to the unusual scene on the tarmac. Once the slide was addressed and removed, Trump boarded the new plane and it departed for Dallas without further incident.

The episode drew particular attention because the aircraft was provided to the U.S. government by Qatar's ruling family and is intended to serve as an interim presidential plane until new Air Force One aircraft are completed. The Boeing 747-8 has undergone modifications for presidential use, though additional work to upgrade security systems is still planned.

The plane has previously faced criticism and questions about its readiness for presidential missions, partly because the conversion work to make it a fully operational presidential aircraft remains ongoing. Nevertheless, the current incident concluded without harm to the president or the aircraft, and Trump continued as scheduled to the Republican Party event in Dallas.
