Hasidic Man Arrested After Tearing Down Images of Women in Arad

Police in the southern Israeli city of Arad have arrested a Hasidic man who was filmed attempting to remove advertisements featuring images of women from a public bulletin board.

The incident occurred in broad daylight this past Tuesday and was captured on video. After the footage circulated on social media, it was forwarded to police and a formal complaint was filed regarding damage to public property.

Arad Mayor Yair Maayan responded sharply to the incident on the same day, announcing that the municipality would take action. "We will not allow anyone to damage public space or attempt to exclude women from the public sphere," he stated.

On Thursday, police confirmed they had located and detained the suspect, who is a member of the Gur Hasidic community. Following questioning, he was released under restrictive conditions. Authorities expect to file an indictment against him in the coming weeks.

Mayor Maayan thanked the local police station for its swift handling of the case, saying the response was also intended to deter similar incidents in the future.

"The Arad municipality will not permit any party to damage public space or work to exclude women from the public sphere," Maayan said. "I call on all communities to respect all city residents and not allow extremists to act with violence and lawlessness."

The episode adds to recent tensions in Arad over issues of religion and public space, with Maayan consistently taking a firm stance against actions he says infringe on the city's shared public areas.
