Clashes Erupt in Syria's Druze Heartland

Mortar and machine gun fire exchanged in southern Syria as ceasefire collapses; child wounded in shelling of residential areas

Heavy Fighting Erupts Between Syrian Government and Druze Forces in Sweida | WATCH

A fragile ceasefire in southern Syria collapsed Monday night as Syrian government security forces clashed with the National Guard in Sweida, the predominantly Druze province in the country's south.

Fighting erupted at multiple locations west and northwest of Sweida city, including the towns of Walgha, al-Mansoura, and Tel Khadid. Residents reported sustained heavy machine gun fire and mortar shelling throughout the evening.

According to the National Guard, a Druze militia controlling a lot of the province, government forces fired 23mm machine guns and mortars toward the western outskirts of the city. One shell struck a residential area, wounding a child with shrapnel. The militia warned that attacks on civilian neighborhoods would not go unanswered.

Syrian government sources offered a different account, claiming that armed groups attacked security positions in rural areas using mortars and heavy weapons. North Press, a regional news outlet, reported that ten government security personnel were wounded in the exchanges.

The violence comes just days after an August 29 clash within Sweida itself between local factions that involved gunfire, grenades, and rocket-propelled grenades, injuring local commanders and damaging homes.

Sweida remains one of the few areas in Syria where government control is limited. The city and surrounding province are held by Druze forces aligned with the National Guard and the Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri.

A ceasefire reached after intense violence in early 2025 has failed to bring lasting calm. Sporadic firefights have continued in recent months, with tensions simmering between the Druze-led forces seeking local autonomy and Damascus attempting to reassert authority.

The latest developments raise fears that localized tensions could escalate into broader conflict. The fact that shelling reached residential areas, combined with the use of heavy weaponry and simultaneous clashes on multiple fronts, underscores how tenuous the ceasefire has become.

Both sides blame each other for initiating the violence. But one thing is clear: the quiet in Sweida is unraveling once again, and fighting has returned to Syria's Druze heartland.
