Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has made controversial insinuations that Yair Golan, chairman of the opposition Democrats party, had advance knowledge of the October 7 Hamas massacre before the prime minister himself was informed.
In a rare interview with Channel 14, a conservative Israeli news outlet, Sara Netanyahu questioned how Golan arrived so early at the scene of the attacks. "You claim you were a fighter on October 7, you were already there early in the morning, already dressed and ready," she said, addressing Golan. "At a very early hour, when others didn't know, such as the prime minister."
She added sarcastically: "After all, who is the prime minister that he needs to know a war is breaking out? Why inform him?" When asked later about her views on "betrayal theories" regarding possible advance knowledge of the attack from within Israel, she declined to elaborate, saying only: "I don't want to talk about it. I don't know. Let there be a real commission of inquiry."
The Democrats party issued a sharp condemnation in response. "The party strongly condemns the nonsense and lies of Sara Netanyahu this evening on Channel 14," the statement read. "Spreading conspiracies against Major General Yair Golan, and smearing his heroism on October 7, crosses a red line bordering on insanity."
The party's statement concluded: "When Netanyahu ran to put on makeup and look for excuses, Yair Golan charged in and saved lives. The facts will not change, no matter how much the Netanyahu family and Channel 14 try to rewrite them." Golan, a retired senior military officer, was among those who responded to the attacks on October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists infiltrated southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people.
