Houthis Show Military Strength in Yemen

Recent assault killing 58 Yemeni soldiers highlights the Iranian-backed group's control over much of Yemen, even as many Israelis continue to underestimate the threat

Houthis

In August 2026, Houthi rebels in Yemen, the terrorist organization known as Ansar Allah, achieved a significant military victory in their ongoing civil war. The group launched coordinated attacks on Yemeni government army positions in two regions: Ma'arib and Hadramawt, killing at least 58 Yemeni soldiers.

Beyond the Jokes

The scale of the recent Houthi offensive against Yemeni army strongholds reveals the group's surging strength and unchallenged dominance across Yemen's vast territory. Unlike other terrorist organizations that operate from underground hideouts and tunnels, the Houthis function as a governing authority, modeling themselves after Hezbollah's control in Lebanon and Hamas's former rule in Gaza before the current war.

Despite this reality, many Israelis tend to dismiss the Houthis and treat their periodic threats with complacency. During recent rounds of conflict with Iran, numerous Israeli citizens posted Houthi-themed jokes on social media and shared that they don't bother entering safe rooms when missiles are fired from Yemen. The satirical portrayal of Houthis on the Israeli comedy show "Eretz Nehederet" (Wonderful Land) reflected a widespread public perception that the group poses no serious threat.

The latest attack by Yemeni rebels should serve as a stark warning to both the international community and Israel: the Houthis not only make threats, they carry them out, and they are entrenched for the long term.

The Danger of Complacency

The Houthis serve as Iran's extended arm in the Middle East, and as such they represent a significant danger to Israel via air, sea, and land routes.

In the ongoing uncertainty gripping the Middle East, the worst virtual enemy is dangerous complacency combined with underestimating adversaries' capabilities. While missiles launched from Yemen have mostly failed to cause damage, the Houthis' motivation remains sky-high and their control over their country is nearly absolute.
