Trump Posts Iran "Mission Accomplished" Image for 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump posted a heavily edited image to his Truth Social account on Wednesday, laden with political and military messaging. The digitally altered picture shows Trump leaning forward in a determined pose, set against a backdrop of aircraft carriers, fighter jets taking off, American flags, and battle smoke.

On the left side of the image appears former President George W. Bush beside a sign reading "Mission Not Accomplished 2001–2021," with destroyed military vehicles and abandoned combat boots in the background. On the right side stands Iran's recently killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, next to a sign declaring in bold letters "Mission Accomplished 2026."

The phrase "Mission Accomplished" carries significant historical weight, directly referencing President George W. Bush's infamous 2003 speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, where he spoke beneath a banner bearing those words following the invasion of Iraq. That declaration became a source of intense criticism over the years as fighting in Iraq continued for nearly a decade, deepening America's costly involvement in the Middle East.

Through this latest post, Trump appears intent on distinguishing himself from both traditional Republican foreign policy and Democratic administrations, drawing a sharp line between what he characterizes as past failures and his own anticipated leadership. The image arrives amid the Trump administration's new Iran policy, which emphasizes economic pressure rather than immediate military action.

In a radio interview, Trump addressed the health status of Iran's current leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, offering new details about injuries sustained during the strike that killed his father. "I don't think Mojtaba Khamenei is dead," the president stated clearly, while describing the extent of damage inflicted.

According to Trump, the Iranian leader "was very badly injured, on the left side of his body, the arm, the leg, the whole thing was badly injured." However, the president emphasized again: "But I don't think he's dead." Trump also commented on the Iranian regime's behavior following the injury, noting that "if he's dead, they're putting on a pretty good show, because they keep talking about going back to talk to him all the time to get his final blessing."

The president then turned to the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz, where an ongoing American campaign against Iran continues. Trump reported that mines have been removed from the area and stressed that despite threats, the strait remains operational. "But the strait, it's working, it's a working strait," the president said. "Yes, every once in a while there'll be a drone or a rocket or something that gets fired, but it's a working strait."

Separately, Iran and Oman have reached a dramatic agreement on a proposed framework for establishing a temporary shipping corridor seven nautical miles wide in the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement emerged from talks in Tehran between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, and includes a joint project to clear mines along with continued technical discussions to establish permanent management of the passage. However, Tehran has made clear that the strait will not actually reopen until the United States "accepts Iran's conditions."
