IDF lookouts identified an Egyptian national crossing the border fence from Egyptian territory into Israel in the Nitzana sector overnight Tuesday, the IDF Spokesperson announced.

Following the identification, IDF forces moved to the location and detained the Egyptian national. He was taken for further questioning by security forces.

The IDF stated that it views the incident with severity and remains on high alert in defending the sector. The incident is under investigation.

The Nitzana sector, located on the southern border with Egypt, has been the focus of sustained security attention. In recent months, significant smuggling infrastructure has been uncovered in the area, with dozens of weapons and large quantities of drugs smuggled across the Egyptian and Jordanian borders during 2024–2026.

In a joint operation by the Shin Bet and the Israel Police's Southern District Investigations Unit, six Negev residents were arrested on suspicion of involvement in smuggling combat equipment and drugs. According to the investigation's findings, dozens of pistols, dozens of M16 rifles, three machine guns, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and large quantities of hashish were smuggled into Israeli territory.

The current incident joins a series of cases that have occurred on the Egyptian border in recent years. In February 2026, dozens of white vans were reported spotted very close to the border fence near Shlomit, an incident that raised alarm among residents and led to the deployment of IDF forces and attack helicopters.

The IDF continues to operate at high readiness along the entire border with Egypt, using advanced surveillance equipment and forces prepared to respond rapidly to any unusual incident.
