Israeli health authorities are investigating a possible case of Ebola after a traveler who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo developed fever and other symptoms, the Health Ministry announced.
The patient is currently being treated in isolation at Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv, where laboratory tests are underway. Results are expected within the coming days. Meanwhile, health officials have launched an epidemiological investigation to trace anyone who may have come into contact with the individual.
The Ministry emphasized that no confirmed Ebola case has been diagnosed in Israel to date. Officials are urging anyone who has returned from Congo and develops symptoms to remain at home as much as possible. This marks the second suspected case reported this month, an earlier investigation of another Congo returnee yielded negative results.
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has recently surpassed 6,000 confirmed infections, according to government data. The current toll stands at 6,041 cases with 2,911 deaths.
This represents the largest Ebola outbreak in Congo's history. The epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment available.
