An Israeli hiker has gone missing on Mount Olympus in Greece, prompting search efforts by local authorities and Israeli consular officials. Ami Yogev, 46, set out Sunday to hike in the Mount Olympus area and has not been in contact since, his family in Israel announced Tuesday evening.
According to the family's statement, Yogev departed from the Prionia parking area and began ascending the trail. His last communication was a photograph he sent to his mother, reportedly taken after the second rest stop on the E4 trail on the mountain. The family also noted reports that he was last seen in the Kalakos area, though it remains unclear whether this sighting has been confirmed.
The family is asking travelers who have been on the mountain in recent days to check whether they saw someone matching Yogev's description, passed him on any of the trails, mountain huts or rest points, or spoke with him and might know his planned route.
Anyone who was in the area since Sunday and saw Ami Yogev, or has information that could assist in locating him, is urged to pass details to the family or search and rescue teams.
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying: "From the moment the case became known, the Israeli consul in Athens and the Department for Israelis in Distress Abroad at the Foreign Ministry have been in contact with local authorities, and are working to assist in every way possible in locating the Israeli who has lost contact in Greece."
