Defense Minister Israel Katz delivered an unusually blunt public warning during Tuesday's Yom Kippur War memorial ceremony at the National Memorial Hall on Mount Herzl, threatening massive retaliation against Gaza in the event of any future kidnapping.
"Based on intelligence, I am warning from here the terror organization and its supporters, from Iran to Erdoğan: if a single Israeli soldier or civilian is abducted, all of Gaza City, with its buildings and terror towers, will be evacuated southward of its million residents, as we did in Operation Chariots of Iron II, and will be dealt with in the same manner in which Rafah and Beit Hanoun and 70% of Gaza's territory were handled, until his return," Katz declared.
The defense minister emphasized that Israel would employ the same tactics it has used elsewhere in the Strip. "This is the language that the jihadist terror organizations in Gaza and Lebanon understand, and this is the language we speak: evacuation of the population, destruction of infrastructure, and seizure of territory," he said.

Katz drew a direct line from the 1973 war to Israel's current security challenges. "Even today, 53 years after the Yom Kippur War, we are in a battle against those who seek to destroy us. They did not succeed in 1973, and they will not succeed today," he stated.
The minister outlined Israel's preemptive strategy against Iran, citing lessons from the Yom Kippur War. "We struck Iran twice with powerful preventive blows, removed the nuclear destruction threat, eliminated Khamenei and destroyed strategic capabilities that set Iran back many years. The work is not yet complete, and if necessary we will strike a third time until the overthrow of the terror regime and its removal."
He also detailed Israel's current military posture across multiple fronts:
"The IDF is currently deployed in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza in powerful security zones on the other side of the border as a lesson from the events of October 7, to prevent jihadist elements from being located near our borders and communities. The security zones are empty of residents and the IDF operates within the territory, establishes outposts and destroys all terror infrastructure below and above ground, including homes that served as terror outposts for all purposes.
We will not retreat from the Yellow Line in Gaza to new deployment lines inside Gaza as long as Hamas is not removed and Gaza is not disarmed of weapons and tunnels. We will not allow a threat to our communities."
Katz concluded by crediting Israel's military achievements to its fallen soldiers.
"All our achievements on the battlefield, in the political arena and in the struggle for Israel's security and future were achieved thanks to the courage, heroism and sacrifice of IDF fighters and security personnel, and thanks to the fallen throughout the generations, who gave their lives for the revival of the people of Israel in their land and for the defense of the State of Israel.
"There is great importance in perpetuating the memory of the fallen and remembering them and speaking about them. In thousands of years, our people will remember the fighters of Israel who fell in defense of the homeland, their heroism, their spirit and the price they paid to ensure the existence, security and future of the State of Israel," he said.
