Fisherman Survives 15 Days in Cave

Aristo Cristino Valdés, 31, was rescued alive against all odds after becoming lost in an unmapped underwater cave system while diving with his father. Rescuers had expected to recover only a body.

Moment of rescue

A 31-year-old fisherman in Mexico has been rescued alive after spending 15 days trapped in a dark underwater cave system, in what rescue experts are calling an extraordinary survival story.

Aristo Cristino Valdés had gone diving with his father in a cenote, a natural sinkhole filled with groundwater, near San Francisco de la Paz. These geological formations often connect to complex networks of flooded underground caves. During the dive, Valdés spotted a fish and pursued it deeper into the cave system. When he attempted to return, he found himself completely disoriented in the pitch-black subterranean maze. The cave, which had never been explored or mapped, featured sharp rocks and visibility so poor that divers could see barely a meter ahead.

When Valdés failed to surface, his father attempted to find him before alerting rescue services. As days passed, the search expanded to include expert cave divers from Mexico, Germany, the United States, and the Dominican Republic. Six days after the disappearance, rescuers located Valdés's diving fins at a depth of approximately 65 meters. Eight days later, an experienced American diver named Harry Guest discovered a reserve air tank at around 100 meters depth. In an interview with Divernet, Guest explained that finding the tank provided crucial clues about the missing man's path.

The following day, Guest returned to the same location and discovered a large, dry cave chamber. When he called out "Is anyone there?" he was stunned to hear a voice respond from the darkness: "Yes!" Guest promised to return with additional equipment, and soon came back with another diver. The two equipped Valdés with an oxygen tank and safely brought him to the surface, 15 days after he had vanished.

During his ordeal, Valdés endured what can only be described as an almost unimaginable survival experience. He remained in total darkness, cold and hungry, without any food. His physical survival depended on stream water flowing through the cave chamber, which he drank to prevent complete dehydration. Mentally, he said he spent most of the time sleeping and speaking daily to G-d in prayer, refusing to abandon hope that his life would be saved. Due to the prolonged time in darkness, Valdés completely lost his sense of time, when rescued, he believed he had been in the cave for only three days.

Rescue teams and investigators involved in the operation acknowledged they had been called to the scene expecting only to recover a body. Mexican researcher Carlos Jiménez, who participated in the search, said rescue forces were prepared to find a corpse, but G-d had other plans. Upon rescue, Valdés was rushed to hospital suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition. In an interview with NMás network, portions of which were reported in the Daily Mail, the survivor expressed his gratitude for receiving his life back as a gift and seeing his family and children again, an outcome that even professional rescuers are describing as miraculous.
