North Korea Nuclear Destroyer: 74-Cell Warship Unveiled

North Korea on Sunday released detailed technical specifications for its newly commissioned destroyer, the Kang Kon, a 5,000-ton warship equipped with 74 vertical launch cells designed to carry cruise and ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads. The vessel also features advanced radar systems, naval artillery, and a helicopter landing deck.

Kim Jong Un, the country's leader, attended the commissioning ceremony at Wonsan port alongside his daughter, Kim Ju Ae. The ship is named after North Korea's first chief of the general staff, who died during the Korean War.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kim declared that integrating nuclear weapons into the naval fleet would expand the country's deterrence capabilities. "The concerns of our enemies will expand even further," he stated, adding that "the time has come to realize our sovereignty at sea and beneath it."

The destroyer's unveiling follows a May 2025 accident during its initial launch attempt, when the vessel listed to one side and sustained damage. Kim characterized the incident as a "criminal act" at the time, and the ship has since been repaired. He pledged to unveil the next phase of naval construction in eight months.

The continued prominent presence of Kim Ju Ae, the leader's daughter, at formal military events has drawn attention from analysts. State media referred to her as "the respected daughter," and experts view her appearances at strategically significant occasions as calculated preparation for eventual succession.

During the visit, Kim announced an ambitious plan to construct massive 10,000-ton destroyers and develop "secret underwater weapons." The Kang Kon represents only the beginning of a broader naval armament drive by North Korea's fleet.

The destroyer Choa Hyun, which entered operational service last month, serves as the flagship of the modernized fleet. That vessel is equipped with anti-aircraft systems and nuclear-capable missiles. Experts point to a distinct Russian technological signature in the design and weapons systems, reflecting strengthened security ties between North Korea and Russia.

North Korea's navy is currently in the midst of a major expansion: the destroyer Cho Hyun (51) was completed after 14 months of trials, the Kang Kon (52) is in advanced evaluation stages, and two additional vessels from the same series are already under construction.
