After the elections

Analyst: Bibi can't reach 61 seats

Ariel Kahana lays out the price Netanyahu may have to pay to stay in power: rotation in the premiership or dropping the chareidi parties from the coalition

Bennett, Eisenkot and Netanyahu

Political analyst Ariel Kahana said this morning (Sunday) on Kol Chai Radio that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will need to make one of two major concessions if he wants to form the next government: either agree to a rotation in the premiership or drop the chareidi parties from his coalition.

Kahana was addressing the options for forming the next government and the conditions under which opposition parties might agree to sit with Netanyahu.

"I think the best thing would be for the opposition to break its promise not to sit with Netanyahu. But Netanyahu also needs to give something of his own, the question is whether it will be rotation or giving up the chareidim," he added.

His remarks suggest that a unity government depends not only on the opposition changing its position, but also on Netanyahu's willingness to compromise either on the composition of his coalition or on sharing the premiership itself.

Kahana presented the two options as scenarios for discussion, not as concessions Netanyahu has already agreed to or as proposals currently on the table in negotiations.

The analyst also addressed the possibility of another round of elections, arguing that it would not improve Netanyahu's political position.

"Netanyahu is talking about repeat elections, I don't think that's right. He has no chance of reaching 61 even then," Kahana said.
