Regavim warned Wednesday morning of a new and dangerous smuggling method operating on Israel's borders: helium balloons carrying payloads of up to 100 kilograms, unmonitored by security forces and invisible to electronic countermeasures designed to stop drones.
The alert follows Sunday's discovery of a 100-kilogram drug shipment in the agricultural fields of Moshav Ein Yahav in the Arava, bound for Jordan. Residents who found the package noted that the weight matches that of an armed terrorist. According to Regavim, the incident marks a troubling shift in border smuggling: a large-scale move from sophisticated drones to helium balloons.
During the months of war, drone smuggling across the borders expanded significantly. These operations run along the Egyptian and Jordanian borders as a daily two-way trade corridor: the Negev "exports" dangerous materials and drugs out of Israeli territory, and in return, tens of thousands of weapons are smuggled in. These weapons are not merely a criminal problem, they can flow immediately to terror infrastructure and hostile elements.
Under pressure and in response to the severe danger, the IDF increased its involvement in the fight and the Shin Bet entered the picture. As part of the campaign, the Knesset updated legislation: a bill initiated by MK Amit Halevi (Likud) redefined border smuggling as a serious security offense rather than the old customs and goods violation. Dedicated systems for monitoring and electronic disruption of drones were also established.
In response to the disruption operations against drones, smuggling organizations changed their operational pattern and shifted resources to sophisticated low-tech solutions. The new method relies on meteorological and mechanical planning: the payload is attached to helium balloons according to wind direction measured in the field. To ensure accurate targeting and retrieval, a GPS component is attached to the payload, functioning as a "black box" that transmits its precise location to smugglers across the border.
