Total Solar Eclipse Crosses Europe Today

Millions across the continent witness rare astronomical event as moon's shadow sweeps from Russia through Iceland to northern Spain

A total solar eclipse is crossing Europe on Wednesday, August 12, marking the first time since 1999 that the continent has experienced such a phenomenon. The moon's shadow began its journey in the afternoon over Russia, traveling through Greenland and Iceland, and is currently passing over northern Spain before disappearing into the Atlantic Ocean.

During the eclipse's peak, the moon completely obscures the sun, casting a dark shadow across the landscape. While the entire event spans approximately two hours across the continent, the period of totality—when the sun is fully blocked—lasts a maximum of two minutes and eighteen seconds in areas experiencing the full eclipse.

Spanish retailers reported overwhelming demand for special protective eyewear required for safe solar viewing. "I've been searching since Friday, but I can't find them anywhere," a Barcelona resident named Mabel told AFP news agency. "They're not even available on Amazon anymore, so it's impossible," she added.

In Spain, where viewing conditions were optimal, the path of totality stretched from Oviedo in the west to Mallorca in the east, passing through Burgos. Residents in these areas experienced nearly two minutes of complete darkness (roughly 1m 48 seconds maximum), accompanied by a noticeable temperature drop and unusual animal behavior. The eclipse occurred in the early evening with the sun low on the horizon—requiring observers to have an unobstructed western view.

Other European regions, including France and much of the continent, witnessed only a partial eclipse. Partial views were also available in Canada, the northern United States, and portions of North Africa.

The eclipse occurs at a particularly significant time, just two weeks before a total lunar eclipse expected on the seventh of August.

Spain, the world's second-largest tourism destination, anticipated significant economic benefits from the eclipse during peak summer season. The event was expected to particularly boost rural areas in the country's north, regions that have struggled for decades with deindustrialization. Hotels and tourist sites along the path of totality reported full occupancy.

It also coincides with an intense heat wave affecting Europe. The sudden temperature drop during totality was especially noticeable against the backdrop of the prevailing heat.
