President Donald Trump announced Friday that White House chief of staff Susie Wiles is leaving her post and will be replaced by her deputy, Stephen Miller, starting Monday.
Trump said Wiles, the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff, will move to his political operation. Miller has served as deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser. He is one of the president’s closest aides and the architect of many of the administration’s immigration policies.
The shake-up comes days after Republicans lost control of both the House and the Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, amid growing tension within the party.
“It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have served on his team from Day One, and I am honored beyond words to serve as his White House Chief of Staff,” Miller wrote on X.
Sen. Thom Tillis, a Republican, called Miller “the worst of all possible choices” for the role.
Leaving the White House after the announcement, Trump told reporters, “We’ve got to make some moves.”
