Gaza Flotilla: Thunberg, Sarandon Join Maritime Protest Mission

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg and Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon are among a coalition of pro-Palestinian activists announcing plans for a large-scale flotilla to the Gaza Strip later this month. Organizers say the mission, involving dozens of vessels, will set sail in an attempt to challenge Israel’s 18-year blockade on the coastal enclave.

The activists plan to depart from Spain on August 31 with several dozen boats. On September 4, they will be joined by another group of vessels departing from Tunisia. According to organizers, the delegation will include participants from 44 different countries, in what they describe as the “largest solidarity display” since Israel imposed its maritime blockade on Gaza in 2007.

In a joint statement, the group accused Israel of causing “mass destruction” in Gaza, claiming:

“Israel has dropped the equivalent of eight atomic bombs on men, women and children. We cannot stand idly by.”

They further called on supporters worldwide to join the effort, saying, “Silence is not an option. A humanitarian corridor must be opened, and the pressure must increase.”

The announcement comes two months after the British vessel Madelene, carrying 12 pro-Palestinian activists, was intercepted by Israeli Navy commandos from Shayetet 13 as it neared Israel’s coast. Video released by the Israeli Foreign Ministry at the time showed soldiers offering water and sandwiches to passengers before escorting them to shore, where they were later deported.

Israel maintains the blockade is necessary to prevent weapons smuggling into Gaza by Hamas and other militant groups, while critics argue it constitutes collective punishment of the population.
