Major General Tomer Bar retires today from the IDF, leaving behind a legacy defined by unprecedented operational intensity. Under his command, the IAF conducted strikes in Gaza, Judea and Samaria, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, and Iran, eliminating tens of thousands of terrorists in less than three years.
Total Air Supremacy
As the IDF’s long-range operational arm, the IAF under Bar successfully decapitated the leadership of Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Most notably, the force achieved absolute air superiority over Iran, dismantling the military capabilities of the IRGC and its leadership to a degree previously thought impossible.
Key operations included:
- Yemen: Strikes 2,200 km from Israel, neutralizing the Houthi Chief of Staff.
- Syria: The near-total destruction of the Syrian Army’s ground, air, and naval capabilities within a three-day window.
- Iran: Precision strikes that targeted high-ranking officials with surgical accuracy.
Zero Downed Manned Aircraft
Despite hundreds of thousands of flight hours in high-threat environments, the IAF maintained an extraordinary safety and operational record. While coalition forces in the region faced several losses, Bar concludes his term without a single manned Israeli aircraft being downed by enemy fire (excluding one technical helicopter crash in Gaza and several downed UAVs).
A Complicated Legacy
Despite these immense achievements, two significant shadows remain on Bar's record:
- The handling of the pilot protest movement prior to the war.
- The IAF's delayed response during the initial hours of the October 7th Hamas invasion.
Nevertheless, Maj. Gen. Bar leaves the IAF as the most lethal strike force in Israel's history, having proven its ability to project power simultaneously across the entire Middle East.
