A diplomatic storm is brewing in Okinawa, Japan, following the arrest of a US Marine accused of strangling a 39-year-old local woman to death and robbing her of her wallet and bag at a hotel in the city of Naha.
According to police, Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, stationed at the US Marine Corps base Futenma, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the death of Anna Yagi.
Security cameras at the hotel captured a man identified as Ballard, wearing a black shirt, trousers and white trainers, entering the premises with the woman. Shortly afterwards, he was seen leaving alone. Ballard was later located in an entertainment district in Okinawa city, approximately 25 kilometres from Naha.
Ballard denies the allegations, and the investigation is being conducted by Japanese authorities. Because he was not on duty at the time of the alleged incident and was arrested outside the base, he is expected to face trial in the Japanese legal system.
