An American bomb from World War II, submerged for over 80 years, was discovered in waters near the Plymouth docks.
The bomb, estimated to weigh approximately 250 kilograms, was located on Monday roughly 40 meters from Pendenis Headland. Following the discovery, authorities initially established a marine and land security zone, but after experts examined the find, officials decided to significantly expand the closure area.
Beginning in the morning, the evacuation zone was extended to approximately 750 meters, encompassing more than 300 homes from which residents were required to evacuate. Authorities went door-to-door instructing residents to leave by 9 a.m., with police making clear that no one should re-enter the area until receiving explicit authorization.
Explosive ordnance disposal experts were called to the scene, alongside Royal Navy divers from Bravo Unit, which specializes in locating and neutralizing underwater threats. Police, fire services, the Coast Guard, and port authorities are also operating in the area.
