Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a forceful warning to Turkey on Wednesday evening, responding to reports of strengthening contacts between Ankara and the new government in Damascus and Turkish attempts to expand its military footprint on Syrian territory. Netanyahu made clear that Israel will not permit new threats to emerge along its northern border.

"We will not tolerate Turkish military entrenchment in Syria that threatens Israel," the Prime Minister declared. Netanyahu revealed that Israel had already conveyed its message to relevant parties in the region, using the pointed term "Don't." He added pointedly, referring to attempts to ignore Israeli warnings: "Apparently they didn't hear it well enough, so we made sure they understood it better."

The Prime Minister's sharp statement comes against the backdrop of reports about an unusual phone call between Mossad chief Roma Gofman and Syria's new Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, in which the issue of Turkish military presence in Syria was directly addressed. According to reports, the conversation took place last Thursday, just days before Israel conducted extensive airstrikes against a military base in northern Syria.

During the call, Gofman expressed Israeli concerns about the establishment of Turkish forces near the border, particularly given Ankara's increased military activity in the region. The sensitive diplomatic contact is taking place amid dramatic geopolitical shifts in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, and represents one of the highest-level contacts recorded between Jerusalem and the new Damascus government.

Israel took the unusual step of claiming responsibility for strikes on the Abu al-Duhur base in northwestern Syria, asserting that Damascus had violated the security status quo by allowing Turkish forces to deploy at the airbase near Aleppo. A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said that "Israel and Syria agreed to maintain the status quo on security matters, which Syria was about to violate."

Meanwhile, Tom Barrack, the U.S. special envoy for Syria and U.S. ambassador to Turkey, told Reuters that Turkey received no advance warning of the Israeli strikes. According to him, after Turkish forces detected aircraft moving north toward their territory, they "could reasonably have prepared their own response." The American envoy noted that "fortunately, level-headed people managed to prevent the situation from deteriorating further."

Turkey's response was swift. Turkish media adopted an aggressive line against Israel, with leading television channels, newspapers and news websites in Ankara and Istanbul rejecting Israeli arguments. The newspaper "Turkiye" ran the headline "Serious Provocation by Israel," while "TAKVIM" claimed "The Zionists' Problem is Turkey."

Netanyahu's remarks constitute a semi-official confirmation that Israel is closely monitoring structural changes in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime, and is determined to act proactively and militarily to prevent any regional actor from re-establishing itself in the area and threatening Israeli security. The growing Turkish presence on Syrian soil represents a central concern for Israel, especially given Ankara's increased military activity in the region.

The American envoy noted that the incident illustrates the need for a mechanism to prevent friction between Israel, Turkey and Syria. According to him, Washington is already assisting with information sharing and dialogue between the parties, but a "stronger mechanism" is needed to prevent misunderstandings and create direct communication channels between the various actors operating on Syrian territory.
