Gene Hackman dead at 95, along with his wife and dog

The beloved and versatile screen actor played in westerns, superhero movies, and many other roles on film.

Actor Gene Hackman was found dead along with his wife and dog in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, according to the BBC.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed just after midnight Thursday the couple had died, along with their dog, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican.

Mendoza said in an interview Wednesday evening there was no immediate indication of foul play. He did not provide a cause of death or say when the couple might have died. 

Hackman played in a wide range of films and genres.

To lovers of superheroes, he was Lex Luthor in three of the four Christopher Reeve Superman films.

To lovers of westerns, he was the man from The Quick and the Dead and Unforgiven.

For lovers of military drama, he was the captain who crossed wits and strategy against Denzel Washington in Crimson Tide.

For people who liked more "realistic" dramas, they could see him in The Conversation and Mississippi Burning.

Hackman won the Best Actor Oscar for William Friedkin's 1971 thriller The French Connection, and another for Best Supporting Actor Clint Eastwood's Western film Unforgiven in 1992.

His other Oscar-nominated roles were in 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde, 1970's I Never Sang for My Father, and as the agent in Mississippi Burning (1988).

He was 95 years old.
