Probe Ordered Into Airport Strike Chaos

Transport Minister Miri Regev has directed the establishment of an independent committee to investigate last week's work stoppage that paralyzed Israel's main airport

Chaos at Ben Gurion airport

Transport Minister Miri Regev announced Sunday the formation of an independent investigative committee to examine the events leading to last Thursday's work stoppage at Ben Gurion Airport, Israel's main international gateway. The external probe will operate alongside an internal review being conducted by the Israel Airports Authority (IAA) council.

The Airports Authority separately announced its own internal investigation, to be headed by the IAA's internal comptroller with assistance from an independent external professional. According to the IAA, the committee has been instructed to produce preliminary findings by the end of this week.

Last week's strike created unprecedented chaos at Ben Gurion, leaving thousands of travelers stranded for hours. Check-in counters were shuttered and baggage failed to reach conveyor belts for more than two hours during the disruption.

The turmoil began when ground crew workers walked off the job on one of the year's busiest travel days, with approximately 100,000 passengers expected to pass through the airport.

Airport operations management subsequently declared a "crisis event" due to operational difficulties, including problems loading and unloading aircraft and a shortage of available parking positions for planes.
