The Ger Rebbe reportedly told a close associate that MK Yitzhak Goldknopf will continue representing the hasidic movement in the next term, citing his obedience to rabbinic leadership as a key factor

As Israel's haredi political parties prepare their candidate lists for the next Knesset elections, the Ger Rebbe has reportedly decided that current MK Yitzhak Goldknopf will continue serving as the hasidic movement's representative in the United Torah Judaism faction. According to a report Sunday by Ari Kalman on i24NEWS, the decision was conveyed during a recent conversation between the Rebbe and Shlomo Verdinger, a close associate who visited the Rebbe's residence in recent days.

Sources familiar with the conversation told i24NEWS that the Rebbe explained his decision by pointing to a central consideration: Goldknopf's reputation as an obedient public figure who faithfully follows the directives of the hasidic leadership.

Representatives of Ger Hasidism, which constitutes the largest and most influential component within the Agudat Yisrael party, are traditionally selected through the direct decision of the Rebbe. Adherence to the guidance of the hasidic court's leadership forms a cornerstone of how Ger representatives conduct their public service, and according to sources, this was the primary factor behind the decision regarding Goldknopf.

However, sources within the hasidic community emphasized in the report that no official decision or public announcement has been made at this stage, and the matter has only been discussed in private conversations. A final determination is expected in the coming days as the deadline for submitting party lists approaches.

The decision comes against the backdrop of periodic tensions between Ger leadership and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over legislative issues and matters affecting the haredi community. Goldknopf himself has sharply criticized the government in recent weeks over the handling of yeshiva student arrests and sanctions imposed on the haredi public.

As part of efforts to smooth relations between the sides, Verdinger met with Netanyahu last Friday to discuss outstanding issues and attempt to bridge disagreements. The meeting took place amid concerns about a possible split between Degel HaTorah and Agudat Yisrael ahead of the upcoming elections.

Last week saw a significant meeting between Shlomei Emunim faction chairman Meir Porush and Bnei Brak Mayor Hanoch Zeibert, who manages political contacts on behalf of Ger Hasidism. The meeting addressed, among other topics, Degel HaTorah's desire to separate from Agudat Yisrael and explored whether Agudat Yisrael could realistically cross the electoral threshold independently if the two parties joined forces.

The decision regarding Goldknopf's continued representation comes during a turbulent period in haredi politics, as the ultra-Orthodox parties face critical decisions ahead of the expected election campaign.
