Ayala Ben Gvir, wife of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, responded Sunday to the public outcry following her husband's 50th birthday celebration. The event, which was attended by senior police officials, politicians, and family members, drew sharp criticism amid the ongoing national security situation.

"We wanted to do something joyful for Itamar’s 50th birthday," Ben Gvir stated. "It is permissible to celebrate and to be happy. Itamar and the members of Otzma Yehudit are in the North constantly. We are all living this reality."

Addressing the Critics

Ben Gvir dismissed the negative coverage from media outlets, suggesting the backlash was inevitable regardless of the event's scale.

"Regarding the criticism in the news studios, it doesn't matter what happened, they would have come out against it, even if he had held a small event," she said. She characterized the critics as "very specific, embittered people," adding, "It’s true there are challenges and much pain, but ultimately there is also much good in this country. I recommend everyone not to listen to those trying to cause depression; they kill all joy in life."

The "Gallows" Cake Controversy

The celebration faced particular scrutiny after Ayala Ben Gvir presented her husband with a birthday cake featuring an illustration of a noose. The imagery was a reference to the "Death Penalty for Terrorists" law that the Minister has been actively championing.

Critics argued the imagery was insensitive and inappropriate given the current climate, while supporters viewed it as a symbolic nod to his political agenda. Ben Gvir concluded her remarks by reinforcing her stance: "It is permissible to smile and permissible to rejoice."
