A Shin Bet source revealed himself to be a double agent, deceiving Israel to think that no Hamas attack was coming on October 7, according to a report today (Tuesday) by Channel 12 News.

According to Channel 12 reporter Omri Maniv: "During the war, an agent operated by the Shin Bet was arrested in Gaza and brought to Israel for interrogation, where he confessed: "I was a double agent, I deceived you."

This was the key moment of deception: "He recounts that he received a phone call from the Shin Bet in the late hours of October 7th, and said: "There is no offensive preparation by Hamas, I know, I am updated." This agent was supposed to know if an attack was going to be launched when asked, while many Hamas members already knew about it."

Maniv then explained why this deception was so important: "How significant was this conversation? Against the background of warning signs that emerged during the night and triggered red alerts, which led among other things to that conversation, the answers he provided were translated into what is called a "weakening signal," meaning they contributed to the assessment that Hamas was not about to attack. As far as we understand, not many calls were made to agents that night as part of the security establishment's misunderstanding of what was happening, which is why this conversation is attributed considerable weight in Israel."
