The head of Egyptian General Intelligence, Hassan Rashad, arrived in Jerusalem this morning for critical meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and top Israeli security officials to advance the implementation of the US-brokered peace plan for Gaza.

The visit, which signals Cairo’s central role in maintaining the fragile truce, focused primarily on the next steps of President Donald Trump’s comprehensive framework for the region.

Top-Level Security and Political Consultations

Rashad’s itinerary included a direct meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, where discussions centered on stabilizing the Gaza ceasefire and setting conditions for the agreement’s subsequent phases, particularly those concerning post-war governance and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.

In a significant security-focused session, the Egyptian intelligence chief also held talks with the head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), David Zini. This meeting is considered vital for coordinating intelligence efforts to prevent terror attacks and smuggling, and for addressing the status of the remaining bodies of deceased Israeli captives held by militants in Gaza.

Egypt, alongside Qatar, served as a key mediator in the negotiations that led to the recent hostage exchange and ceasefire. Rashad's presence in Jerusalem underscores the diplomatic pressure and urgent need for coordination following recent flare-ups that have threatened to unravel the truce.

Focus on Phase Two and Regional Stability

Sources familiar with the discussions indicate that Rashad’s mandate is to ensure both sides adhere to their commitments, especially as the Trump administration’s envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, are also in the region pressing for progress.

The talks are expected to tackle the contentious issue of border crossings, humanitarian aid, and security arrangements aimed at preventing Hamas and other militant groups from rearming.

The diplomatic push from Cairo comes at a critical juncture, as international players seek to translate the recent cessation of hostilities into a more permanent arrangement for Gaza, safeguarding long-term regional stability.
