The "Global Sumud" Circus: Provocative Flotilla Sails Toward Gaza

With roughly 1,000 people on board and high-profile participants involved, this 100-boat flotilla is trying to do what has never been done before, breach the blockade and reach Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s security cabinet convened a special meeting focused on a large international flotilla currently sailing toward Gaza, in what organizers are calling a major challenge to Israel’s naval blockade.

Israeli intelligence estimates that approximately 1,000 activists from dozens of countries are aboard some 100 vessels, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla. The convoy is allegedly carrying humanitarian aid, including food, medicine, and medical supplies.

The flotilla departed from Barcelona earlier this month, made a stop in Sicily, and is now progressing across the Mediterranean. Israeli officials view the mission as a provocative political stunt designed to generate international pressure and potentially provoke a confrontation with the Israeli Navy.

A notable participant on one of the ships is Dr. Margaret Connolly, a physician from Ireland and the sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly. She joined the flotilla in Sicily and has publicly stated she is prepared to be arrested.

The Israeli government has made clear it will not allow the vessels to reach Gaza’s coast. The IDF and Israel Navy are preparing to intercept the flotilla in international waters if necessary, consistent with previous incidents in which similar attempts were stopped.

Organizers of the flotilla, many of whom have a history of anti-Israel activism, say the mission is purely humanitarian (We have heard this before). Israel maintains that the naval blockade is essential to prevent weapons and dual-use materials from reaching Hamas.

We all know how this will end, because we have now seen this movie before- The Israeli Navy, including its commandoes from Shayetet 13, will detain the people on board the vessels and send them back home and they will never reach Gaza. A paltry amount of supplies will be found on the boats, along with drugs and condoms.
