IDF Eliminates Hamas Commander Who Held Hostages and Participated in Release Ceremonies

The Israel Defense Forces announced today that it killed Sabhi Sami Mahmoud Shahatit, a platoon commander in Hamas's military wing, in a targeted airstrike conducted two days ago in the Nuseirat area of the Gaza Strip. According to the IDF, Shahatit was directly involved in the October 7 massacre and held Israeli hostages throughout the war.

Military officials said Shahatit infiltrated Israeli territory during the October 7 attack and played an active role in holding multiple Israeli captives. During Operation "Gates of Heaven" in November 2023 (the temporary ceasefire that saw the release of some of the hostages) he participated in the handover ceremonies, transferring captives to the International Committee of the Red Cross. This role made him a recognizable figure within Hamas's hostage-holding apparatus.

The elimination is part of an ongoing campaign of targeted operations against militants directly involved in the massacre and hostage-taking. In recent weeks, the IDF has killed several senior Hamas operatives, including Muhammad Mushtaha, a company commander who held seven Israeli hostages, and Mahmoud Fataer, a Nukhba force commander who also took part in hostage handover ceremonies.

According to the IDF spokesperson, Shahatit had recently been working to advance additional terror operations against Israeli forces and civilians. The targeted strike was carried out to eliminate the ongoing threat he posed to troops operating in Gaza and to residents of southern Israel.

IDF forces under Southern Command continue operating in the area in accordance with the ceasefire agreement, focusing on terrorists involved in the massacre and hostage-taking. Operations also include sealing terror tunnels and eliminating senior commanders in Hamas's security apparatus.
