Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has drawn a sharper line on the contentious issue of military conscription for ultra-Orthodox Haredim, stating in a Channel 14 interview that those not genuinely studying Torah must either enlist in the IDF or face jail time.
The remarks represent Netanyahu's most direct ultimatum yet on draft exemptions that have long exempted Haredi yeshiva students from military service—a privilege that most Jewish Israeli citizens do not receive. While praising the value of Torah study itself, Netanyahu made clear that religious study cannot serve as a blanket shield from conscription.
"Those who are truly learning Torah, that's important," Netanyahu said. "But those who aren't genuinely studying must serve or face consequences."
