IDF Scrambles: Chinese Smart Cars Seized Over Espionage Fears
Amid Espionage Fears, IDF Begins Collecting Chinese Smart Vehicles from Officers

Following a security assessment indicating a real risk of espionage and sensitive data leaks, the IDF has begun collecting Chinese-made smart vehicles, initially from officers with access to classified information.
The unusual measure was ordered by the Chief of Staff after security agencies concluded that the smart systems in certain Chinese electric vehicles could be exploited to gather sensitive military data. Previously, IDF policy had already banned such vehicles from entering bases due to similar concerns, but the new assessment prompted a systematic collection.
The operation will be carried out in stages, starting with officers exposed to sensitive information, then extending to all officers. According to IDF estimates, around 700 vehicles, primarily Chri models, are affected.
The decision follows similar restrictions in the UK and U.S., where Chinese vehicles have been barred from sensitive military facilities. Security sources noted that some models include advanced systems such as cameras, microphones, and sensors capable of transmitting data to third parties. “Each of these vehicles is essentially a computer on wheels,” said a senior officer, “and represents a potential tool for gathering sensitive intelligence.”
