An exceptionally intense heatwave is forecast to strike Israel starting Thursday, with peak temperatures expected over the weekend, particularly Friday through Sunday. According to the Israel Meteorological Service, temperatures could soar up to 50°C (122°F) in parts of the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea region - a highly unusual occurrence for early August.
The prolonged heatwave is expected to bring temperatures 8 to 10 degrees above seasonal averages, with central highlands, including Jerusalem, forecast to reach around 40°C. Coastal and lowland areas will experience extreme heat stress due to elevated humidity, making outdoor activity difficult even in the evening hours.
The Meteorological Service warned of serious health risks, especially to vulnerable populations. While regional alert levels have not yet been published, updates are expected later this week based on evolving forecasts.
