Rare meteorological event

Torchlighting Ceremony Canceled as Israel Braces for Historic Storm

The cancellation was prompted by forecasts of strong winds at the Mount Herzl site, with gusts expected to make the outdoor event unsafe.

The annual Torchlighting Ceremony at Mount Herzl, marking the start of Israel's Independence Day celebrations, has been canceled due to extreme weather conditions, announced Minister of Culture and Sport Miri Regev on Wednesday.

The decision comes as Israel prepares for an unprecedented storm, with wind speeds expected to approach hurricane levels in parts of the country.

Minister Regev, after consultations with key officials, including Galit Wahaba Shasho, director of the state ceremonies and events unit, Dr. Amir Givati, head of the Israel Meteorological Service, and representatives from production company Electra Target, determined that the ceremony could not proceed. "The safety of participants and attendees is our top priority," read a statement from Regev's office.

The storm, described as a rare meteorological event, is expected to bring winds of up to 110 km/h, particularly in northern Israel, with peak intensity around 6:00 PM. For context, winds exceeding 119 km/h are classified as hurricane-force. Such wind speeds are unheard of in many parts of Israel, with some areas potentially experiencing conditions not seen in decades, or even centuries.

The Israel Meteorological Service has warned of possible damage to electrical infrastructure, including power outages, and disruptions to transportation. Authorities in affected regions have advised residents to remain indoors as much as possible and secure outdoor objects to minimize risks from flying debris.

"This is a historic weather event, and we are taking every precaution to ensure public safety," said Dr. Givati.

Updates on rescheduling the ceremony or alternative Independence Day arrangements have yet to be announced.
