In the wake of a horrific terrorist attack on May 21, 2025, outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered heightened security at Israeli diplomatic missions worldwide. The attack, which claimed the lives of two Israeli embassy staff members, Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, was condemned by Netanyahu as a consequence of “antisemitism and the rampant incitement against the State of Israel.” The couple, reportedly days away from their engagement, was gunned down by Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old Chicago resident, who shouted “Free Palestine” during his arrest. Netanyahu stated, “We are witnessing the horrific price of antisemitism… Blood libels against Israel result in spilled blood, and they must be fought with all our might.”

The attack has reverberated globally, prompting increased security measures at Israel’s 196 diplomatic missions, including 10 in the United States. In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams, who recently established a municipal office to combat antisemitism, directed the NYPD to enhance patrols at synagogues and Jewish centers. Police engaged with congregants at morning prayers to alleviate fears, reflecting heightened community concerns. U.S. President Donald Trump denounced the attack on Truth Social, writing, “These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.”

The tragedy underscores a rising tide of threats against Jews and Israelis worldwide, intensified since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, massacre of 1,200 Israelis and abduction of 251 hostages. Recent incidents include a 1992 Iranian-led suicide bombing at Israel’s embassy in Buenos Aires, killing 29, a June 2024 crossbow attack on a Serbian police officer outside Israel’s Belgrade embassy, and a thwarted ISIS-linked plot against the Israeli embassy in Berlin in October 2024. Reports also indicate Iran’s use of criminal networks to target Jews in Sweden, including a failed attack on Israel’s Stockholm embassy. Israeli Ambassador to Germany Ron Prosor warned, “Muslim antisemitism… leads to and encourages terrorist activities worldwide.”
