Winter Returns: Will it Snow in Jerusalem?

Israel is heading into an unusually intense winter system this week, with forecasters warning of extreme conditions and a real possibility of snowfall in Jerusalem — not just on Mount Hermon.
After flooding in the Sharon region, the weather pattern is shifting sharply. A cold, unstable system is expected to move in early in the week, bringing widespread rain, strong winds, and a significant drop in temperatures across much of the country. The combination of cold air and moisture has raised the likelihood of snow at higher elevations inland.
Jerusalem is now firmly in the conversation.
From Monday into Tuesday, temperatures in the capital are expected to fall to near-freezing levels, particularly overnight. Rain is forecast during the same window, and if temperatures dip just a few degrees further, precipitation could turn to snow. Even light snowfall would be notable, as Jerusalem does not see snow every winter.
Alongside the cold, winds are expected to be severe, with sustained speeds of 70–90 km/h and stronger gusts possible. These conditions increase the risk of fallen trees, power outages, and travel disruptions, particularly in hilly areas like Jerusalem.
Authorities are expected to issue guidance urging residents to secure outdoor objects and prepare for hazardous conditions. Drivers are being warned of slippery roads, reduced visibility, and the potential for temporary road closures if snow begins to accumulate.
At this stage, forecasters are cautious about making definitive claims. Snowfall depends on a narrow temperature range, and small changes could mean the difference between cold rain and a white morning. Still, the setup is there — and it is the most credible snow signal Jerusalem has seen this season.
Some citizens are unimpressed. "After the chaos the news caused over Byron, it barely drizzled. Am I really going to get all worked up and worried again? It might rain, that's okay," said Na'amah, a resident of a settlement near Jerusalem.
If snow does fall, even briefly, it would mark one of the more memorable weather events of the winter, following days of flooding and severe storms elsewhere in the country.
Bottom line: cold, wind, heavy rain — and Jerusalem may wake up to snow. Not guaranteed, but no longer far-fetched.
