Haredim won't serve in the army

Haredi MK: The IDF does not need Haredim, and it does not want them

As a result of the severe losses in the national religious community over the past week and a half, there has been increased anger at the ultra-Orthodox for refusing to serve.

A Haredi Member of Knesset (MK) claimed that the religious-Zionist camp has become the "useful idiots" of the political left in Israel.

According to MK Moshe Roth from the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party, the IDF is not currently facing a manpower shortage and there is no real need to draft Haredi men into military service. He asserted that the entire issue of Haredi conscription is a "big hoax" by the left to prevent the strengthening of the national religious camp.

Roth strongly criticized the demand to conscript Haredim into the IDF. In a radio interview on Kol B'Ramah, he even stated that "in the State of Israel, no conscription law will pass."

He also argued that the IDF does not actually want to draft Haredim, and that the religious-Zionist community has become the "useful idiots of the left." He accused the left of cynically using the casualties of the religious-Zionist camp as a "political weapon."

When the Minister of Aliyah and Integration, Ofir Sofer, spoke harshly against Haredi leadership, Abutbul fired back with his own strong words. He claimed Sofer was only interested in political posturing to impress his own constituency, and that "for every Shabbat there is a Motzei Shabbat" - meaning Sofer's moment in the spotlight would be fleeting.
