Maayan, the mother of 14-year-old Uri Portal, who was fatally shot by a friend in Rishon LeZion, posted a heart-wrenching eulogy for her son on social media today (Wednesday). “My heart is shattered, broken into pieces,” she wrote. “How can a mother eulogize her child? Her baby? I know we’re not supposed to ask why, but I’m screaming to God: why? Why, why did you take my air, my joy, my heart?”

“You were and will remain a special boy, a beloved boy, surrounded by friends,” Maayan mourned her son, killed in the devastating tragedy. “If you only knew what you’ve done. You shook an entire nation.”

Maayan shared that her son’s friends have been supporting her: “They haven’t left my side for a moment.” She noted that they have been spray-painting graffiti in Uri’s memory across Rishon LeZion. “They even made me a jacket with graffiti on it. It doesn’t leave my body and will stay with me forever.”

“Send me strength to look after your father and your siblings, to have the strength to raise them in a joyful home. Don’t let me fall,” she pleaded, concluding, “I love you forever.”

Last night, it was cleared for publication that Uri Portal, 14, succumbed to his injuries after being shot in the chest by friends in Rishon LeZion while playing with a firearm. He was rushed to Wolfson Medical Center undergoing resuscitation efforts in critical condition, but medical staff were ultimately forced to pronounce him dead. Uri was laid to rest yesterday.

The Rishon LeZion Magistrate’s Court released the teen who accidentally shot Portal to five days of house arrest. The police requested a stay of execution and are appealing the decision in the district court. The owner of the firearm, the father of another 16-year-old suspect still in custody, returned to Israel and went directly to the police station to give a statement. His testimony revealed that the firearm was legally licensed and stored in a safe. His son knew the safe’s code and took the gun.
