A toddler was found wandering alone on a street in Yavne at around 1 a.m. Tuesday, prompting an overnight effort by police and city workers to find his family.
A passerby spotted the child and called police. Officers from the Yavne station and the city’s patrol unit arrived quickly and made sure he was safe, according to the Yavne municipality spokesperson. An on-call social worker from the city’s welfare department stayed with the toddler through the night.
Meanwhile, police and municipal inspectors searched the surrounding area for the family’s home. In the morning, city workers noticed neighbors gathering outside a house in the neighborhood, and contact was made between the family and the police station. After their identity was confirmed, the toddler was returned to his family.
It is not yet clear how the child ended up alone on the street in the middle of the night.
The municipality praised the police, the patrol unit and social services for their quick response and care for the child throughout the night.
Police have reported several similar cases around the country in recent months, in which young children were found wandering alone at night. Yavne’s security and emergency services have also dealt with several unusual incidents in recent weeks.
