election day attack

Attack thwarted near Rechelim on election day

Security forces say lone attackers are highly motivated to disrupt Israel's election, with 42 would-be terrorists arrested in the past week alone

The attack Tuesday morning near the community of Rechelim in Shomron demonstrates the determination of lone terrorists to carry out an attack that would disrupt Israel's election day, security officials said.

According to security establishment figures, 42 attacks were prevented in the past week alone, with 42 terrorists arrested, both in groups and as individuals. Among them was a terrorist arrested Sunday in the Binyamin region on suspicion of attempting an attack against IDF soldiers in the area. All were motivated by a desire to carry out an attack that would disrupt election day, either in the lead-up to voting or during the day itself.

The security establishment deployed additional special units across Judea and Samaria this morning. Regular army units were also brought into the Judea and Samaria sector to reinforce forces, particularly to allow Border Police fighters to leave checkpoints and replace them with regular soldiers, as needed and in case rapid deployment into the field becomes necessary.

As of now, security officials say the deployment of forces across both divisions in Judea and Samaria, in the north and south, is complete, and they will decide in the coming days when to return to routine operations in the sector.
