Journalist held at President's Residence

Security sweep at entrance to consultations uncovers suspect item in foreign reporter's equipment; journalist questioned as bomb squad called in

President Yitzchak Herzog

A foreign journalist was detained Wednesday at the entrance to the President's Residence in Jerusalem after a security scan flagged suspicious material in her equipment, as President Yitzchak Herzog prepared to open the first round of consultations with parties elected to the 26th Knesset.

Security personnel stopped the journalist during the equipment check for media crews and prevented her from entering the compound. She was taken for questioning by security officials to determine the nature of the material found in her possession. The incident occurred at the height of heightened security preparations ahead of the arrival of party leaders.

The President's Residence issued a statement: "During a security check of those entering the President's Residence, the X-ray machine alerted, and as a result entry to the Residence has been halted at this stage pending clarification of the matter. Police bomb technicians are on their way to the site to examine the equipment. The matter is being investigated with the relevant authorities."
