President Yitzchak Herzog said Thursday evening that he was caught off guard by US President Donald Trump's decision to halt direct American military aid to Israel, and that the move is one more reason Israel needs to form a new government immediately rather than go to elections.
Herzog: US aid freeze "like thunder"
President Yitzchak Herzog said he was blindsided by President Trump's decision to halt direct American military aid to Israel, calling it very worrying and another reason to form a new government quickly

"The issue of American aid is very worrying to me, and it also fell on me like thunder on a clear day," Herzog said in a meeting with members of MK Gadi Eisenkot's "Yeshar!" party. "We have an MOU, a memorandum of understanding with the US that is supposed to run until 2028, and this is really one of the major objectives. That's why we need to form a government and not go to repeat elections, for the whole issue called the United States."
During the meeting, incoming MK Yoram Cohen said that "we are in a critical emergency in light of the elections in the US, the security threats and the dismantling of democratic processes. We presented four principles, a Jewish and democratic state, the Declaration of Independence, service for all, and the dismantling of Hamas. Anyone who is a partner to these principles is invited to join. I believe we will succeed in forming a government, and our door will remain open even after it is sworn in."
